The Avon Network started in September 2009: the organisation received EA funding until March 2015. But there were limitations on how the money can be spent, and the Network had to deliver a Quarterly Report to England Athletics.

The Network's function was to assist all those groups and individuals in the Avon area to develop athletics, whether as Coaches, Officials, Club organisers, Schools, Local Councils, and Athletes. The main thrust was to “help people to help themselves” by assisting projects and developing individuals.

NOTE: EA funding for all Networks (not just Avon's) ended at 31st March 2015. although some unspent funds from 2014-5 were made available for club projects in the Avon area. There has been no business meeting of the Avon Network since April 2014, and no Avon Network event has been held since June 2014.
